These past couple of months have been very interesting concerning the life of my shovelhead and the introduction of said motorcycle to the world of forced induction, more specifically turbocharging. This also happens to be the first time I have ever turbocharged anything, car bike, anything. It has definitley been a learning experience.

Origionally I was going to use this turbo on an ironhead, but I couldn't shake the visions of grenading the transmission and having it lock up on me at some ridiculous speed. Besides that, when you push the extremes of a motor to get more and more power out of it it is only natural that as you get more and more radical with it the potenital for the failure of that motor becomes more and more possible. Now, if you're running a mild motor at low RPM's and you do have a problem with it odds are that it will not be too big a deal, definitley nothing catastrophic. But on the other hand if somthing fails in your big-bored, stroked, high performance screamer when it is wound up tight at full tilt boogie odds are that it ain't gonna be pretty. The other big reason I chose to turbo the shovelhead was simple, If I totally lunch it, like rods through the cases or a blown up cylinder, I can simply order new parts and rebuild. You can't exactly go down to the harley dealership and order brand new engine cases for your ironhead, so if you fuck them up beyond repair you are simply shit out of luck.

A turbo will let a motor produce virtually unlimited power, the biggest factor becomes the acutal suructural integrity of the motor. As boost pressure rises, power output will go up as well, but eventually something will let loose. That's just the way it goes, push it too far, get a little too generous with the boost and ka-boom!!

I'm not trying to say that turbocharged bikes are unreliable, in fact just the opposite is true.

With a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) motor if you are trying to get more power out of it you'll modify the ports in the heads increase to increase airflow. Increase the compression ratio which will let you install higher lift, longer duration cams and still make great torque. But now you'll really be able to breathe at higher rpm's, which is where you'll really shine if you're looking for big time power output. The faster you spin the more air you pump the more fuel you can burn and the more power you will make.

With a turbo motor you can run it low compression with a stock or very mild cam in it and it will be a total pussycat crusing around, it will vibrate less, it will put less of a load on the pistons and bottom end, and will generally last longer than the high compression motor because it is only really going to work hard when you roll on the throttle and the boost comes on. It's performance on demand, and you don't need to beat the hell out of your valvetrain with a radical cam to achieve it.

You will only run into problems if you get too wild with the boost and really test the limits.

I'm going to leave you with a few pictures of what happens when you push it too far. I'll explain how my motor ended up looking like this soon enough, but I'm all typed out for tonight.

I got the shovel's turbo system tuned in tonight!!! It's stupid quick, scary, and unforgivingly fast. It may be the death of me. But it is a total blast!!!! Hearing that turbo spool up makes you forget that you have an antiquated harley motor driving you along and makes you wonder if someone didn't slip a jet engine in those frame rails when you weren't looking!!!!

I still have a minor stutter coming onto boost, I'll get it perfect eventually, But I'm totally excited to see such an improvment in the get up and go!!!

I'm going to get some better pictures of everything up here once all the turbo shit is all painted and prettied up, and I am definitley going to record some on and off bike video of all this shit, but here's a little something for now.

I haven't been around much, but I've been really busy with Radley. However I've got my garage set up pretty nice where I can start really doing some nice shit out of it, so expect to see alot more stuff going up here. Hang in there for me, folks. I hate not being able to keep this place updated with nice shit all the time, but I'm spread pretty thin lately. For now here is a little somthing for you, the first big project to come out of my new garage that I'm really proud of. These are the flywheels for the turbo bike, they started out at 11pounds 12ounces per half, first thing I did was knife edge them to see how much weight I could pull off of them. It took a nice bit off, but they still weren't quite where I wanted them so I just knocked the knife edge off and reduced the diameter of them. I was shootin' for seven pounds per half once they're finished but I left them a little heavy so I have plenty to work with when I balance them right now I'm at seven pounds 12 ounces per half. That's eight pounds off of the combined set. Should be damn snappy.

shaving them down that far really fucked my scraper clearance, but it's nothing that a little welding and machine work can't correct.

I'm also running S&S rods, but they're for an evo sportster, which changes things quite a bit. First off, the biggest difference is that they're just under a half an inch shorter than ironhead rods are. If I remember right the ironhead rods are .480" longer. The shorter rods increase the rod angle during the middle of the stroke, which basically gives them better leverage on the crankpin for more torque. Another thing that the shorter rods do which will really benefit the turbo is that they increase the piston speed during mid stroke, more piston speed means gases moving through the motor faster, which means a faster spool. The shorter rods do bring some problems into the picture though. First off, if the flywheels weren't shaved the pistons would crash right into them, secondly your pistons are now way down in the bore compared to where they should be and if you don't correct that you're gonna end up with a mighty 4:1 compression ratio. To correct the compression problem and prevent the rings from being raked across the drain holes near the bottom of the cylinder I'm going to have to machine .050" off of the cylinder decks on the case and .150" off of the cylinder bases, then I'm gonna have to knock off around .300" off of the head gasket end of the cylinder I'm not sure exactly of that number, the determining factor on that will be setting up the squish area in between the piston and head. After I do all that it'll be time to break out the burette and figure out the compression ratio and determine how much of the dome I have to mill off of the pistons to get an 8:1 ratio out of it. Another little issue is the one of the pistons wanting to crash into each other at the bottom of the stroke, but that is easily fixed with a little bit of clearancing on the back skirt of the front piston.

I just got my Keith Blacks in about a week ago. I love these pistons, I run them in everything I can get 'em for. They're Hyperutectically (high heat, high pressure) cast in steel molds out of a high silicon content alloy that holds up to tremendous amounts of heat, they have some of the lowest thermal expansion rates of anything out there which lets you fit them very tight in the bores and not have to worry about scuffing the skirts, and the alloy that they're cast out of is hard as hell which coupled with the tight clearances means you've got a piston that you can run extremely hard and still get 50k+ miles out of easily. And to top it all off they're quite a bit lighter than a stock or forged piston.

I also got my new trap door for the tranny, ditch the frail aluminum one in favor of a cast iron piece and you're well on the way to a stronger transmission.

That's all I've got for now, I just dropped the cylinders off to be bored, once I've got those back I can do the final fitting on everything. Ride fast and smart. -Dave

Took a super G and punched the venturi out to 50mm, shortened the emulsion tube, and did a couple other little tricks to get it ready for pressurization. Almost fucked the body up when I intersected the passageway for the air bleed, but I got some brass tubing that is the same I.D. as the original passageway, drilled the passageway for a nice light press fit and tapped it home with a little red loctite. Disaster averted. Top end power with the bigger carb is ridiculous, launch hard and slip the clutch up to about twenty then you better be holdin' on cause it's a rocket ride to the far edges of sanity.

I got the heads back togheter for the shovelhead today. I didn't think to take any pictures before I started, but I took care of some valve shrouding that was going on since the valves are sunk in deep to make TDC clearance with the cylinders shaved down as far as they are. While I had everthing apart I back-cut the valves, in the pictures up above you can see the cut valve on the left and how it started out on the right, you end up with a valve that has a nicer shape that'll flow alot better with just enough seat material to let it run for a long time with no problems. I'm gonna put the bottom end togheter tomorrow and if everything goes to plan I should have it ridable within the next couple days.

Hands down the most difficult exhaust I've ever built, Two into ones are a real pain in the ass to keep the tubes equal length and short enough for a nice powerband up top, keeping everything in tight so you don't burn the shit outta yourself all the time proves to be really tough too, as does trying to package it all so it doesn't look like a big turd either. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out though, and now my powerband should really be pulling hard between three and six grand, right where I want it. Before It started really kickin' at about two grand and you could feel the pull taper off at about five. Should run quicker now, when you shift the optimum powerband up higher in the rev range the motor is spinning quicker and therefore pumping more air, when you pump more air you can burn more fuel and make more power, and that all equates to more get-up-and-go. It's an endless cycle, almost an addiction if you choose to call it that, build it faster, get bored with the new power, build it faster again, get used to it again, the cycle will only stop when you run out of ideas on how to make it faster or run out of "cubic dollars". It is a hell of alot of fun and a learning experience all along the way though.

114" knucklehead

3 13/16" bore x 5" stroke. 8" carrillo h-beam rods. Ross racing pistons. Roller rockers. Flathead power heads setup for dual carbs. Heads aren't ported, but the ports are a beautiful starting point with thin stem valves on the intake side. Still has a 1:1 rocker arm ratio, which really limits cam selection. Look at that cam, itty bitty base circles, it looks huge, but the lift is only .450" at the valves. The lifters are gonna live a rough life though. In my opinion the guy shoulda done it with shovelheads. Woulda been much faster, and the valvetrain woulda been easier on itself, but some guys just gotta have what they've gotta have.

I've got so much going on latley it's nuts. The turbo bike is apart for paint and I'm about to pop the motor apart to prep it for boost and reinforce the shit outta the cases. But I won't let myself do that until I get the motor back togheter for the shovelhead, which needed a set of pistons and a good going over to check out the valvetrain, the rod, pinon, and sprocket shaft bearings, and I wanted to check and make sure the flywheels are sitll running true. All things I need to do to continue beating the shit outta it with a clear conscience. Since I'm in there I'm gonna erase the oil drain passages in the left case and go to external drains, possibly dumping back into the cam chest to cut down on the windage factor a bit. My frind Billy at advanced machine helped me do up some bitchin' exhaust flanges that'll take evo flanges and gaskets and end the problem of my pipes fallin' outta the heads forever. I'm just trying to resist the temptation to flip the rear head and cylinder and run dual carbs on it. I'll do that later. Right now I've got my hands full with narrowing the fender, relocating the tag, taillight, and oil filter, building new controls, and building a nice clean 2 into 1 exhaust for it that'll use the AR trickery in what looks like a small muffler, but with only one curve to cancel out the reversion pulse so you still get a great sound, you don't lose midrange torque, and it's not restrictive on the top end either. It's time consuming as all get out. The work at the shop has been pretty damn good. Been busy as shit, worked on a damn nice norton about two weeks ago, and we're building a 114" knucklehead motor for a guy too!!! I'll put pictures of all this stuff up later today. I'm gonna get back on keeping this updated, it's just that sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day when you're dealing shop work, personal projects, riding, and a girl at home.

I found these clipons for cheap, but I was really doubtful of how they would look, thought it might look too japanesey. I've seen some bikes that just looked stupid as shit with them on, but I'm really liking them so far

The lanyard kill switch is a necessary evil, I don't plan on eating shit, I'm not trying to mimick a drag bike or anything like that, but I do plan on running the texas mile in late March next year. out there they want you to have a kill switch, ZR speed rated (186+ MPH) tires, a catch can for all breathers, lots of saftey wiring, steering dampeners for the speeds I'm shooting for, a full race suit, race boots and gloves, and a snell approved helmet. Sounds fairly strict, but it's totally understandable. It should be a blast, It's a standing start mile race. You just start sitting there, haul ass for a mile, and they have speed traps setup at the end. They've got some fast fast motherfuckers running out there, 240 MPH Toyota Supras, 230+ MPH Hayabusas, 150+ MPH street pumpgas harleys (new ones, big displacement twincams mostly) even a seriously worked over flathead that did almost 140!!!! I'm gonna take the ironhead out there, and the shovelhead if I can tear it apart, replace the rod bearings and do all stuff to the motor/chassis that I want to and get it back togheter before then.

I've got 43, 40, 38, and 36 tooth rear sprockets for both. I'm runnin' 24's on the front of both. I've never ran anything taller than 24:43 on the streets, That ratio just seems ideal, it's tall enough that you can hop on the interstate and cruise up to 90 before you get the shakes, and even then, if you're feeling especially stupid, you can push it up past 100 and just deal with the vibration, but then you're starting to risk the pipes falling off, the battery rattling apart, and you're also dealing with the fact that cops really don't like to see you going that fast and they hide everywhere. But even with that tall of a ratio if you've got a really well built motor up front it'll still rip right through the gears, pull hellacious wheelies, and leave joe rocket on his brand new R1 with a sock over his left shoe to keep it from gettin' scuffed up from the shifter scratchin' his head and wondering what the hell that thing was that just walked away from him.

The only problem with 24:43 relating to the mile course is that you're going to run out of gear and hit the rev limiter before the half mile mark. At that point you're not accelerating anymore and you're just along for the ride, all the while just keeping the bike wound up tight as fuck right before the limiter. The other option would be to putz up to the half mile mark before you actually get on it. Either way you're not getting everything you can outta the bike.

I'm wanting to make at least three passes. I'm gonna start out at 24:40, If I run out of gear too soon I'm gonna throw on the 38, and if I still wind out too soon I'm gonna make the next one with the 36 on there. I've never ran anything like this, just geared to the hilt on a long stretch of predictable pavement, so I'm not sure how fast I'm gonna run, but I know both bikes will easily do better than 150. I'm excited as shit to see it all go down!

Squirrell Broke down in Macon, GA on the way to Tennessee, So Kevo and I loaded up the bikes in the back of the truck to drive it up there and drop it off to him so he could drive the rest of the way up in it, then tow the car back on the way home. We ended up having an awesome ride back down, perfect weather, kinda overcast, cool, without a threat of rain anywhere. Perfect. On the way back down we stopped into Daytona and met up with Sal, his friend Jessie, and Mark and Doug from quick draw cycles. Had a fucking blast hanging out with those guys over the weekend. Couldn't have asked for a better time, especially up in Daytona.

About a week ago I started on the front hub for the sportster. I took two 74-77 front narrowglide hubs, cut them in half on the bandsaw, and machined them true. Then I took them up to my friend Billy's shop to get them welded back togheter.

After some machining and shaping work tonight this is what I ended up with. The top hub is what I wanted for the ironhead, the bottom is the leftovers from the hubs. I machined them down really thin, just thick enough to fit a spoke through.

If you look at the races in this pic you can see that the endplay spacer for this hub is only gonna be about 1/4" wide.

When I get to it, I've got plans to track down a narrow rim for that hub and build a narrowed 35mm front end around that wheel and this headlight:

I finished the camera mount for the shovelhead tonight.
It's solid as shit, I reinforced it to hopefully cut down on the vibration the camera sees, but this is still what it ends up shooting:

I guess it's time to mount the camera to me to totally isolate it from the vibrations. Oh well, won't be the first time or the last that i've built something that didn't work out like I had planned.

Finally made the camera mount that Tony and I were talking about last year. The weather was shit tonight, so I couldn't try it out on the road. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I'm also really hoping the vibration won't be as bad on the road as it is free-revving. We'll see, I'm just wondering how long it's gonna take to vibrate this poor little camera apart.

Lately I've been getting really sketched out about the back wheel on the ironhead. It came off of a klr250 dirtbike and wasn't really designed to see more than 40hp and sixty miles an hour. That was fine when it first went on there, before the turbo and all the other shit came into play. Now it's starting to look pretty flimsy. The biggest problem is the wheel bearings:

It uses these small bearings that look like if you took them apart the balls in them would be about the size of a BB, and on top of that the axle for it is a little under 3/4" and seems like it would be no big deal to bend:

The bottom is the axle for the klr wheel, the one on top of that is a bent-ass 3/4" axle out of my shovelhead, and the top is a 1" axle.

I've already bent a couple 3/4" axles in my shovel, and I know that tony has gone through a shitload (I think he ended up with a chromoly one in there). So I'm lookin' to make my life a little more hassle free and just lace up a stronger wheel for the back of the thing. I've got a 17"x4.25" akront rim off of my orange bike and some later model aluminum back hubs that take the sealed bearings. I'm gonna lace those two togheter, replace the bearings with one inchers, mill the swingarm slots to 1" and run the big axle to really give me peace of mind.

That rim's got a 150 on it in this picture, it should make a 140 spread out just sweet.

A couple months ago there was a guy in the shop with a basket case harman motor sitting in the front of his truck very similar to the second picture down, he was trying to find rings for it. I tried to trade him my 93" shovelhead for it, not the motor, the whole bike. I tried to trade him my high compression 113 and the bike for it. He wouldn't go for it, wouldn't sell it, would not come off of it for anything. He knew what he had. Damnit. Could have built that thing into the toughest motor ever, 4 5/8" wheels with those cylinders on top would be around 139". Shovel rocker boxes too?? to fucking cool for school.

Kevo and I were leaving downtown fort myers last saturday night, we went under the bridge and pulled into a parking lot right after the bridge to get onto US41 because you can't make a left under the bridge for absolutley no reason at all. I noticed a car at the top of the bridge, way off, no big deal. We pull out, I look behind us and this guy had already covered half the distance between us and where he just was, haulin fuckin' ass right through a red light and in less than a second he flew right past us. Josh and Dan were behind us in Dan's van and they said the guy came within a foot or two of kevo. He shoots past us like a bullet in the far right lane, gets past us and tries to do a three lane sweep, you could tell the guy was good and tanked up because he oversteered left horribly, the car started to slide, he tried to save it and overcorrected and went right into the curb, went airborne for a few feet and sailed right into the corner of a brick building. He had to have been doing 100. No shit, the car exploded when it hit. The front half with the drivetrain still in it was about 15 feet away from the rest of the mess. The rest of the car was a disaster, just a crunched up ball of shit. Walking up on it I was sure the guy was just smashed, and I've got no clue how it happened but he was still in the seat and the roof was peeled back and he was pushed up half out the window still kinda in the seat, It looked really akward, but almost comfortable in a fucked up way. His legs were destroyed but the rest of him seemed alright. He was out cold but still beathing, so we called an ambulance fom him, waited for them to get there, then got the fuck out before we were stuck there all night. What a great way to end the evening!

I took these the next day before they patched up the hole in the wall.

Walking up to the bike to get the hell out of there I noticed this sign in the window. Nice!
